Q.1 [30]
20-25 lines (about 180 words) का composition किसी एक topic पर लिखो:

(a) There must be many things that you enjoy. Write, giving at least one example each, of what you like to read, to eat and to do in your spare time. End your essay by writing about one thing that you absolutely dislike doing in your spare time, when you are not studying.

(b) "Now that there is a television set in almost every room in every house, family members have stopped having interesting conversations with each other." Write your views about this statement.

(c) Imagine that you have to write an article for a travel magazine about a place which you think is good for tourists to visit. Describe the place but also remember to include some advice about the journey, places to stay, and what all to carry to make the most of the trip.

📝 Writing strategy Topic (a) — Easy choice: 3 personal favourites (read/eat/play) + 1 dislike। Each para 5-6 lines। Example: 'I love reading Harry Potter series — magic + adventure। For food, I crave aloo parathas with curd। In free time, badminton makes me feel alive। But what I absolutely dislike is cleaning my cupboard — it feels endless!'

Topic (b) — Argument essay: Take a side (agree या disagree). Give 3 reasons + 1 example each. Counter-argument पर 1 paragraph ज़रूर।

Topic (c) — Descriptive: 5 W's — Where? When? Why visit? What to see? How to reach? End with 'don't miss / must carry' list.

Common mistakes to avoid: spelling errors, no paragraphs, repeating same words (use synonyms), going off-topic।

गद्यांश पढ़ो:

Coconuts are the fruit of a palm tree. In Sanskrit, the coconut palm is named 'kalpa vriksha', which translates as 'the tree which provides all the necessities of life' because of the endless list of products derived from its various parts. The scientific name of the tree is Cocos Nucifera. The word 'cocos' comes from Spanish, meaning 'monkey-faced', as one side of the hairy coconut resembles the head and face of a monkey, with the three dents in it placed like two eyes and a mouth. The coconut palm thrives on sandy soil and salty water and prefers areas with abundant sunlight and regular rainfall.

The white, fleshy part of the seed is edible and is used fresh or dried in cooking. The cavity in the fresh coconut is filled with coconut water, which contains sugar, fiber, proteins, vitamins and minerals, so it is a nutritional food source and is used as a refreshing drink in hot and humid places.

Coconut milk is made from grated coconut pulp which is mixed with hot water and squeezed to extract the oils and flavours. It is also used in cooking.

The dried up flesh of the seed is called 'copra'. It is a source of coconut oil and is also used in candies, cakes and cookies. The major use of coconut oil is in soaps, shampoo, margarine, butter and cooking.

The hard coconut shell is used to make a whole range of accessories including necklaces, buttons, lampshades, placemats, coffeepots, cups, ladles, etc. The hairy fibre of the husk of the coconut is called 'coir'. It is used for weaving ropes, sacks, mats and even clothing. The husk is a good source of fuel as well.

The leaves of the coconut palm are marvellously adapted to make good quality paper pulp, brooms, hats, baskets, fans and water-proof roofing material. The trunk is used for making beams for the roofs of houses, benches, tables, frames, carvings, paper-pulp and all sorts of construction material. The roots are used for dyeing cloth and the chemicals in the roots make a good mouth-wash and even medicine.

Q.B(a) [2]
Food is a necessity of life. Which four other necessities of life does the coconut tree fulfil for us? (Hint: Do not name the products we can make from the coconut tree).
Ans: The four other necessities are: (1) Drink (coconut water for thirst), (2) Clothing (coir from husk), (3) Shelter (trunk for roof beams + leaves for roofing), (4) Medicine (roots make medicine + mouthwash).
Q.B(b) [2]
How do we come to know from the passage that coconut trees are most likely to be found along the coasts of warm countries?
Ans: The passage says coconut palms thrive on sandy soil + salty water (which means seashore) and prefer abundant sunlight + regular rainfall (which means warm, tropical countries). Together, these clues point to coastal areas of warm countries.
Q.B(c) [2]
All parts of a coconut tree are useful. From your understanding, which part is of the least important use to people? Give reasons.
Sample Ans: The roots may be the least important because they are used only for dyeing cloth and making mouthwash/medicine — uses that have many alternatives today. In contrast, the fruit, oil, leaves, trunk, husk and shell each support food, shelter, fuel, and many daily-use items. (Any thoughtful answer with valid reasons is acceptable — this is an opinion question.)
Q.B(d) [6]
If you found yourself ship-wrecked alone on an island with a few coconut trees, name six things you would be able to do to live there for a few days before being rescued.
Sample Ans (any 6):
  1. I would drink the coconut water for hydration and nutrition.
  2. I would eat the white fleshy pulp of fresh coconuts as food.
  3. I would weave the husk fibres (coir) into a rope and mat for sleeping.
  4. I would use the large leaves to make a waterproof shelter / roof.
  5. I would use the dry husk as fuel to start a signal fire for rescue.
  6. I would use the hard shell as a bowl/cup to collect rainwater + store food.

Q.B(j) [2]
Is there any part of the coconut which can be used for making a funny toy for a child? Explain.
Sample Ans: Yes, the hard coconut shell can be turned into a funny "monkey-face" toy because one side of the hairy shell already looks like a monkey's face (the three dents are the two eyes and mouth). With a piece of coir for hair and painted eyes, it becomes a delightful handmade toy.
